Getting into the yoga world can be a little daunting if you’ve never done yoga before. There are so many different styles of yoga, props, teachers, lingo…the list goes on. Where do you start?

Here are some tips to help you choose the style of yoga that most suits you and your lifestyle.

1. Try ’em all

You may have one friend that swears by Bikram yoga, and another who says that Restorative yoga changed their life. How do you know which one is right for you? By trying them out, of course!

Don’t be afraid to try a new yoga style to see what it’s all about. For example, I’ve been practicing yoga for about five years, and I still like to try new styles when I can. Trying a new style or class is a great way to improve your practice if you already have one, and to shop around if you’ve never done yoga before.

By trying new styles, you can take the things you’ve learned and incorporate them into your practice and turning your personal yoga practice into a beautiful mish-mash of all the bits of yoga you like best.

2. Don’t limit yourself

Some days I want a hard, challenging, sweaty yoga practice. Other days I want a smoother, more relaxed, more spiritual practice. Listen to what your body wants on a given day, and turn that into your “yoga style of the day.”

While some people religiously practice one style of yoga, which may be exactly what they want and need, others (like me!) can’t seem to choose a favorite style and just practice what they like, when they like. Keep in mind that you don’t have to pick one style of yoga and stick with that for the rest of your life.

Feel free to let your style choice ebb and flow, changing it if you feel the need.

3. Give yourself options

Give yourself the gift of being able to choose from different styles. For example, get a class pass at a local studio that offers varied yoga styles, sign up for online classes with lots of different teachers, or attend a yoga conference, such as the Berlin Yoga Conference! All of these things will enable you to practice different styles of yoga and try new things.

If you’re trying yoga for the first time, don’t limit yourself to just one style. Give yourself the opportunity and space to try many different styles before choosing one (or two or three) that fit you, your personality, and your lifestyle best. Only you can figure out what style suits you best!

So what are you waiting for? Get out your mat and try a whole new bunch of yoga styles!
